UK ELECTRIC VEHICLE LEGAL GUIDE

Legal Notice: E-Bike and E-Scooter Use in the UK

We appreciate you considering purchasing an e-bike or e-scooter from Top Dog Bikes. It is important to be aware of the legal requirements in the UK to ensure both safety and compliance with the law.

E-Bikes (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles, or EAPCs)

Key Legal Points:

Classification as an EAPC:

  • The bike must have pedals that can be used to propel it.
  • The motor must not exceed a maximum power output of 250 watts.
  • The motor should not provide assistance once the bike reaches 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

Riding Requirements:

  • Riders must be at least 14 years old.
  • No license, insurance, or vehicle tax is required.

Where You Can Ride:

  • EAPCs are permitted on public roads, cycle paths, and any area where regular bicycles are allowed.
  • They cannot be used on pavements or pedestrian-only zones.

EAPC Identification:

Your e-bike must display either the manufacturer's name and power output or a sticker showing compliance with EAPC regulations.

E-Scooters

Key Legal Points:

Privately Owned E-Scooters:

  • It is illegal to use privately owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, or pedestrian areas.
  • They may only be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

Rental E-Scooters:

The UK government is running e-scooter rental trials in select locations.

  • Riders must: Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold a provisional driving licence.
  • Follow local regulations on where e-scooters can be ridden (typically cycle lanes and roads).
  • Rental e-scooters are insured by the operator.

Helmets and Safety:

  • While wearing a helmet is recommended, it is not a legal requirement.
  • Riders must adhere to local speed limits and safety guidelines.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Using a privately owned e-scooter in restricted areas or riding an e-bike that does not meet EAPC standards may result in:

  • Fixed penalty notices.
  • Points added to your driving licence.
  • Fines for operating an uninsured or unlicensed vehicle.

Future Developments

The UK government is currently considering updates to legislation regarding e-scooters and other personal electric transport devices. We recommend staying informed about any changes that could affect your ability to ride legally.

We are committed to ensuring you can fully enjoy your e-bike or e-scooter purchase while remaining compliant with UK laws. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Engwe MapFour N1 Air is the ultimate choice for your first carbon e-bike. Weighing just 15.6kg, it stands as the lightest carbon e-bike with a 100km range.

This premium bike has everything you need for an exceptional ride, offering smooth performance, enhanced agility, and effortless handling—making it ideal for urban commuting.

The N1 Air comes in two versions to suit everyone’s needs: the step-over design for a sporty, high-performance experience, and the step-through design for easy access and everyday comfort.

Its ultra-light 1.28kg carbon frame is eleven times stronger than aluminum, providing precise control, especially on sharp turns.

Crafted with premium Toray carbon fiber, the same material used by Trek, it features exclusive monocoque molding for superior strength and durability.

Designed for a smoother ride, the carbon frame absorbs shocks, reducing road vibrations and offering greater comfort and control, even on rougher terrains.

Equipped with a 36V 10Ah Samsung removable battery, the N1 Air allows for easy battery removal or insertion in seconds, blending convenience with simplicity.

With a long-lasting 100km range, the N1 Air lets you ride for a week on a single charge, so you can focus on the journey, not on recharging.

Anti-theft Protection
Keep your bike secure with advanced smart technology that senses potential threats. It features motion detection, GPS tracking, and geo-fencing to ensure your bike stays safe during your urban commute.

The N1 Air is powered by a 250W inner rotor motor delivering 42Nm of torque with a top speed of 15.5mph (25km/h), delivering seamless performance in a sleek design almost indistinguishable from a standard bike.

With Shimano 7-speed gears, you can easily shift through gears for versatile performance across different terrains and conditions.

The torque sensor provides a smooth and responsive pedal-assist system by precisely measuring your pedal force, ensuring the most natural ride experience.

For added safety, the N1 Air comes with high-quality mechanical disc brakes that offer reliable stopping power with minimal maintenance.

Additionally, the solar-powered tail light enhances the bike’s eco-friendly performance, ensuring your ride is safe and sustainable.

The N1 Air has a 250W Motor and Max speed 15.5mph, which complies with UK regulations.

FAQ's

Do I need a license to ride an electric bike?

No. In the UK you must be over 14 years old to ride an electric bike however you don’t need a licence, tax or registration.

Are Electric Bikes Road Legal?

EAPC Rules: Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle

To be road legal in the UK, electric bikes must comply with specific EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) regulations:

Pedals Required: The bike must have pedals, and the rider must be able to use them to propel the bike.

Speed Limitation: The electric motor must not assist the bike beyond 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

Power Output: The motor's maximum power output must not exceed 250 watts.

Additionally, EAPC-approved e-bikes must include a device that displays either:

The motor's power output or manufacturer.

The battery voltage or maximum speed.

If
an electric bike exceeds the 250-watt power output or the 15.5 mph
speed limit, it cannot be used on UK public roads without obtaining type
approval, insurance, tax, a number plate, and passing an MOT.

Only
e-bikes that meet EAPC regulations can be used on UK public roads
without requiring tax, insurance, or registration. For more information
on EAPC regulations, visit: UK Government Electric Bike Rules.

If
you purchase an e-bike that does not comply with these rules, it can
only be used off-road on private land unless you secure the necessary
type approval, insurance, tax, number plate, and MOT. Please note that
you will be responsible for obtaining these requirements.
